A 5-round G/60 Chess Tournament!: Beginning at 9:30 am: Championship (rated) sub sections U2000 & U1600(rated). Time control: 60 minutes per game per player (no delay). Guaranteed prize fund is $1000 for Championship section (Prize fund is not based on entries) U1600 Section prize fund is based on entries.

A simultaneous exhibition by IM Igor Ivanov: Friday evening from 7-9pm. Mr. Ivanov is a 5-time Canadian National Champion, 9 time Grand Prix Champion and the highest rated player in Utah He will play many opponents at once in a test of skill. Prizes for players who win and/or draw their games.

Tournament Details: Location: Saint George Chess Center. 354 E 600 S St. George, Utah, 84770. Take exit 8 from I-15.

Open Section: Anyone may play. Current US Chess Federation membership required. Entry fee is $49, with a $15 discount for seniors (over 60), and members of the Saint George Chess Center. Guaranteed fund is $1000. Time control is Game/60 minutes. GM and IM players play free.

Under 1600: A section for new tournament players and experienced young players. USCF membership is required. Entry fee is $35 with a $15 discount for seniors (over 60) and members of the Saint George Chess Center.

Fun Section: For players who are new to tournaments. No USCF membership required, and the tournament games are not rated. Entry Fee: $25 with a $15 Discount for Members. Rounds begin at 10am Saturday and the awards ceremony will happen when the last round is finished. Recognition for each player who completes the tournament.

Registration: On site registration for the tournament from 8:00 to 9:00 am. Or Friday evening from 6-9pm during the Simultaneous Exhibition.

Round Times: Saturday, 9:30, 11:45, 2:00, 4:15, 6:30. Half-point byes are available for rounds 1-5 if requested before pairings are made. Last round byes must be requested before round 4 is pared. Maximum of 2 byes.

Entries: Make checks or money order payable to Saint George Chess Center and send to Alan Crooks, 115 West Hope, St. George, UT 84770. Include name, USCF ID#, expiration and rating. New and renewing USCF members must also include mailing address, email address, phone number, gender, birth date and USCF membership dues ($49 regular, $39 without magazine, $39 over age 64, $25 under age 20, $19 under age 15.) Simultaneous Exhibition: Friday, 7pm to 9pm Register by 6:45. $10 adults, $5 under age 18. Additional games are $5/$5 as time allows, at Mr. Ivanov’s discretion. Money back for a draw or win, plus bragging rights. International Master Igor Ivanov is the 9-time US Grand Prix Champion and a 5-time Canadian National champion. He has won numerous Utah Champion titles as well. Ivanov was one of only two players to beat Anatoly Karpov 1979 while Karpov held the title of world champion. Mr. Ivanov has often been called the “strongest IM in the world,” placing at the top of the field among or above grandmasters at countless tournaments in the last 25 years. Games against Mr. Ivanov are always good lessons in chess for his opponents.
