Who We Are

Founded in 2004 by the Alan and Rebecca Crooks family, the St. George Chess Center is a not-for-profit membership organization devoted to extending the role of chess in St. George, Utah, and the surrounding area. The St. George Center promotes the study and knowledge of the game of chess for its own sake, as an educational tool, as an art form, for enjoyment, and also as a means for the improvement of the community. We offer various classes on chess, and organize many tournaments for kids and adults.

The St. George Chess Center is an official affiliate of the United States Chess Federation. For information about the St. George Chess Center, if you would like to become a member, or if you would like to pledge support please contact: Alan Crooks 435.656.2117 or email him at [email protected]

The St. George Chess Center has just finished a huge remodel and is now one of the finest chess facilities in the country. The chess center was first opened in August of 2003 by Alan and Rebecca Crooks. Since that time it has hosted numerous chess events which have attracted some of the best chess players from around the country and even the world. It has now under-gone a beautiful remodel that gives it an even larger chess tournament hall, study areas, snack room with vending machines and an air hockey table, TVs for instructional videos, computers, an office for the resident Grand Master Igor Ivanov and much more. The main hall has a wonderful mural that transports you back in time to a medieval castle.

“We are very excited about the improvements at the center. I have seen chess help so many people for so many people for so many different reasons. I have seen it be a help for children that have ADD to improving the memory of older folks.” Says Alan Crooks.
